You have opened the pages of the first issue of the History and Archives magazine, a new scientific publication of the Russian State University for the Humanities. Our journal is open to a variety of scientific points of view and discussions, its international editorial board will strive for thematic versatility of publications, which will reflect the analysis of facts, events and processes of national and world history, fundamental and applied problems of documentation and archiving. A worthy place in the journal will be occupied by theoretical and practical issues of source studies and historiography. Particular attention in the journal will be given to research based on the introduction into scientific circulation and analysis of previously unpublished archival documents - the most important historical sources. The growth of the archival system and the improvement of archaeographic methods, the complication and intensification of document circulation, the rapid spread of new technologies for processing, transmitting and storing information make us take a fresh look at the nature of the document and the role of archives in modern society. The processes of globalization have increased interest in national historical and cultural phenomena reflected in archival documents. Systematic understanding and management of the information society is impossible without a reliable, authentic, holistic and accessible source base. An interdisciplinary approach to the corpus of genetically interrelated sources as historical phenomena, as cultural phenomena will be decisive in scientific articles published in the journal. A document, including an archival one, whose communicative function lies in its ability to be a source of information, appears at the same time as a reflection of problem situations and value orientations and occupies a special place in the life of society as an intrinsically valuable phenomenon inherent in human mental activity. The study of topical problems of historical archiving, the archival component of research work in the field of history and the significance of documentary heritage in the system of cultural values will allow us to analyze the issues of interaction and harmonious combination of the results of the activities of historians and archivists in the interests of information support for historical science. One of the goals of the journal is to summarize the modern experience of using historical sources stored in archives, manuscript departments of museums and libraries in historical research. A historian cannot conduct fruitful research in the field of the past without relying on an integral archival fund of documents. Without methodically set and systematic work on the study of its composition, origin and fate of archival complexes, a historical study of events and phenomena is impossible. The task of the researcher is to learn to read not only archival documents, but also the archival "fabric", to understand the historical and cultural context in which they were created, selected, described and preserved.
