Middle Ages. Issue 75 (3-4)
Book Description
The issue opens with articles demonstrating new approaches to the study of the medieval representative system: the political claims of the Parlement of Paris are considered as a reflection of the specifics of the French monarchy; indirect circumstances affecting the effectiveness of political participation in governance in the countries of Western Europe; the history of the emergence and use in historiography of the terms "estate-representative monarchy" and "estate representation"; the role of the English parliament in conflict resolution, as well as the status of monasteries in the process of forming a national monarchy in England. Separate sections are devoted to textual criticism, source studies and new perspectives on the study of medieval manuscripts: among them are studies on the use and interpretation of biblical texts, on symbolic objects that draw up and certify legal documents, on the culture and practice of reading. The study of the testimonies of foreigners about Russia is continued by the article about Iosafat Barbaro and his notes about Muscovite Rus'. Much space is devoted to Russian medieval studies: a transcript of the discussion about the new edition of World History (this time it is the third volume devoted to the Early Modern Times) is published, as well as a review by I.M. Grevs on the book by P.M. Bitsilli and an essay on the scientific heritage of E.V. Gutnova in the context of modern historical knowledge.
