The Curse of efficiency, or the "mine" Syndrome

Book Description

The syndrome of the "mine", or "silo tower" (the silo effect), has been worrying the business community for decades. Complicating the organizational structure, narrowing the specialization of departments and the scope of activity of their employees can lead to a blurring of the overall strategy of the company and forgetting its main goal. This problem was first identified as the divergence of the goals of the organization and described by sociologists such as G. Simon and F. Selznick. Gillian Tett, the editor-in-chief of the Financial Times newspaper, defines the "mine" syndrome more broadly in the book offered to readers - as "any strict separation of functions, powers and representations," including views and attitudes. Answering the question whether this problem inevitably arises during the development of the organization, the author of the book translates the analysis into the mainstream of social and cultural anthropology and offers non-trivial business solutions. The book is addressed to the widest range of readers, since the author not only addresses the study of the "mine" syndrome, but also gives examples of its successful overcoming in world-famous organizations.
