The work is devoted to the actual, theoretically and practically significant problem of criminal law protection of the environment in Russia. For the first time in the theory of criminal law, the formation of a sub-branch of criminal law in the legislation of the Russian Federation - criminal environmental law and a new name for crimes consisting in harming the environment - environmental crimes (crimes against the environment) is justified. The social conditionality of the criminal law protection of the environment and the emergence of this sub-sector is revealed. The evolution of the norms of the criminal environmental legislation of Russia is traced. The analysis of the concept, system and types of crimes consisting in causing harm to the environment is given from the standpoint of undermining the biological basis of human habitation and all living things on Earth in accordance with the current Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The issues of qualification of environmental encroachments based on the norms of criminal, administrative, environmental, sanitary and other legislation, taking into account its state as of January 2020, are considered. The problems of liability of legal entities for environmental crimes (crimes against the environment), the differentiation of similar economic and environmental crimes, the differences between the latter and administrative offenses are investigated, proposals are made to improve the criminal law norms on environmental protection. For researchers and university professors, employees of the court and law enforcement agencies, as well as students and representatives of the "green movement".
